If you do one thing tonight.
No Kinono, no cry
Here at Glitterditch, we don't like to get too political. It's sad, but politics is often less funky than we'd wish. And when things get a little groovy, it's usually down to a Burlesconi or a Bill Clinton or -- dare we say -- a Boris. Which is highly suspect. We will allow ourselves a moment of political outrage today, however. We have to: the bureau-crazy of European visas has robbed us of our night out. Thumb piano maestros Kinono No1, who were to inject some Congolese magic into the London night up at the Tate Modern's Long Weekend, have been refused European visas.
It all sounded so good, too. Senegalese politico-psychadelic cinematic wonders by Djibril Diop Mambety were to be screened and accompanied live by the incomparable beats, hypno-hollars and trance drive of modern-trad Kinshasa. Thumb pianos, car parts and megaphones: could these guys be more fun? It shouldn't really come as a surprise that they're a favourite support of pop-quirk experimentalist queen Bjork.
The night's not entirely ruined though. The film screenings are going ahead. Badou Boy is a classic, we're told. And the music end is being taken up by one DJ Rita Ray. We hope she brings a thumb piano as well as her decks.
Darn visa controls ...
