Teach Yourself Gogol Bordello before tomorrow's gig

gogol.jpgWith lyrics like "have you ever been to American wedding? Where's the vodka, where's marinated herring?" gypsy-punk band Gogol Bordello occupy a very special place in Glitterditch's affections. Shame then that we were a bit slow to snap up tickets for the band's concert at the Carling Academy Brixton tomorrow night. But for those lucky few preparing for Wednesday's gig that have never seen Eugene Hütz and co. live before and want to sound knowledgeable and informed, let GD educate you on all things Gogol Bordello.

Say any of the following five statements and you'll have lifelong GD fans awed and floored by your superiority. Maybe.

"I loved Eugene (Hütz - lead singer) in 'Everything is Illuminated' (2005 indie flick with Elijah Wood), but I preferred his first acting performance in the 2004 short 'Kill Your Darlings'."

"You can really tell that Hütz's western musical influences include Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, the Clash and most importantly, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds."

"It's incredible to think that drummer Eliot Ferguson is the only member born in the USA."

"Did you know that the character of Eugene in last year's film 'Wristcutters: A Love Story' was based on Eugene (Hütz), while 'Through the Roof'n'Underground' (track from the band's second album) also features in the movie."

"They were originally called Hütz and the Béla Bartóks, but changed it."

For further study, visit the band's official website and for those of you off to party with the Wanderlust Kings tomorrow - do drop GD a line and leave a comment below.
