Get off your sofa and do something.

Paint! Sex! Fundamentalism!

Now that we have your attention: if the last time you traipsed through a London art gallery looking at paintings you were wearing a blazer with your school's insignia attached to it, it is high time you turn off your television and start getting back into London's terrific visual arts scene.

Not into classic landscapes or pictures of hunting dogs and stags? Not an unreasonable stance. But what are your thoughts on pornography?

Ah, you had to click through, didn't you? You also have to check out the John Currin exhibition at Sadie Coles HQ. In his latest phase, Currin applies quite traditional portraiture techniques to depictions of vivid pornographic images, which he has claimed in various media outlets to be his personal reaction to Islamic fundamentalism. Hm.

The paintings aren't safe for a 'national newspaper', says the Independent
(we haven't seen them in the Hackney Gazette, either), and they're definitely not something to while away an afternoon when your mum is visiting. Unless you have the kind of mum who is cooler than you. But they might just reawaken your long-dormant interest in painting...or fill you with moral outrage. Either, we think, is a good outcome of any trip to a gallery.
