Musical musings
Let's keep our friend electric
Is nothing sacred nowadays?
After playing host to genre shattering bands such as The Smiths, Joy Division, Sex Pistols, Oasis, Public Enemy and a whole slew of others too numerous to mention, rumours are yet again abound that the powers that be wish to close down Camden's wonderous Electric Ballroom.
First opened in 1938, the Ballroom has played host to the kind of bands which would be on the fantasy festival list of any self respecting muso. But, plans are afoot to demolish the iconic venue to make room for temporary tube access whilst the Camden train tube line is redeveloped.
There is even some talk of a ghastly, vacuous shopping centre being stuck on the top of it - really in keeping with place.
May Glitterditch suggest that Camden is just lovely the way it is. Yes, maybe a little rough round the edges but it has more buzz and humour and spark to it than perhaps anywhere else in the world. Re-developing at the expense of something that is a musical legacy would be nothing short of a crime.
Owner of the venue, Kate Fuller has lobbied for support this week from London's mayoral candidates and Glitterdicth is keeping everything crossed that they give this lady the support she needs.
Let's stop this nonsense and keep our musical heritage alive.
