If you do one thing tonight.

An act of godlike genius

magazine.jpgHe was the beautiful broken nihilist known as the Divine David, a man who took striptease a step further by removing layers of his own skin. After at least one mental breakdown, David Hoyle is back, re-formed and completely off-track, careering through the third edition of MAGAZINE at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern.

Last week, he interviewed a lesbian Reverend rendered villainous by an angry crowd of spiritually wounded queens. The week before that, a female-to-male transexual who, now a gay man, performs dolly-bird drag ("quite an equation"). This week's "issue" is DEBT and Lord only knows what he's got up his sleeve but one thing we can promise is a show that's involved, relevant, informed, intelligent, entertaining and probably dangerous. This is the stuff that cults are made of and a rare experience that is by turns personal, political and spiritually epic. This is not only something we recommend that you see if you're at a loose end tonight. If you only see one performance artist in your entire lifetime, make it David Hoyle. Ever wonder what wanky critics mean when they describe theatre as "urgent"? This is it. Essential.
