Is Britney the new Blanche?

After her well-received guest spot on American sitcom How I Met Your Mother, Britney Spears has obviously caught the acting bug. The popwreck might not control her own finances or have custody of her sprogs, but she has reportedly impressed the casting folk responsible for the forthcoming West End production of A Streetcar Named Desire.

And who knows, it could be a good move for the fallen pop princess. The Tennessee Williams classic revolves around the tragic decline of the delicate and formerly beautiful Blanche DuBois, driven crazy by a cruel and violent world. It's no Crossroads, but a girl's gotta eat.

Talking to the Daily Star, an insider claimed: "Britney's been on the list for this for some time but was considered too risky until recently. Her appearance in the American TV show How I Met Your Mother changed all that. She had poise, timing and real flair."

"We wanted her for Blanche because, even though she's technically too young to play her, who else could embody this fallen Southern Belle so well? She's living out the story, so to harness that on stage would be amazing for an audience to see – and cathartic for Britney, too."

Convenient how the role could be therapeutic for Britney. And a guaranteed money spinner for the producers, though I'm sure they have her best intentions at heart.
