New Club Night Alert: YellowBlack

yellow.jpg

If any one was going to find out about a new club night in town, it would be Glitterditch. We're giving you a bit of notice about this so you can clear your diary. YellowBlack starts on Wednesday 13th February at the fabulous Bar Rumba. It's from Buttoned Down Disco favourite Dollyrocker and his new music making partner Nik.

Expect great bands, great music and just generally great dancing fun. Don't believe us? We caught up with Dollyrocker to see what he had to say.

How did YellowBlack come about?

Both Nik and I are really keen on the idea of there being a midweeker worth going to. There are loads of good bands we're excited about, so we're going to mix live music / ace djs / happy hour drinks into a diverse midweeker. Bar Rumba has an amazing sound system, and we're gonna be bloody well rinsing it.

What's it all about?

Well the bands we are getting in are generally fairly indie based, but the music policy is more 'alternative club music'. For example, Toystep pioneers Partyshank are headlining the launch on 13th Feb, and their sound really is very different to other stuff out there at the moment. Other bands headlining are mainly tight fidgety post punk type stuff. But by March, anything could happen, ha ha!

What's different about it from Buttoned Down Disco?

Buttoned Down Disco has always celebrated music from all eras and genres, whilst YellowBlack is all about new music. Apart from that, it's probably going to be a lot more low key than BDD, as it's a brand new night, so I'm not too sure what to expect yet.

What else have you got planned for music domination?

I'm really into the idea of doing a tiny weeny festival showcasing unusual acoustic music, but with one or two bigger bands doing acoustic slots too. I already know where it would be, but I haven't even approached the council yet. Maybe I will just do it on the sneaky, ha ha!

Introduce Nik. We have not met him before.

Nikolas Esselle, 25, floppy dark fringe, likes beefburgers.

Tell us more about him.

Nik has been working in and around club culture for years, regulary djing at Together @ Turnmills, 333, Egg, BDD and countless others.

What's his favourite cocktail?

He's not really into cocktails, however his favourite brew is Brooklyn Lager, a smoky flavoured Lager from the other side of the pond.

His favourite band?

That's a toughy. As a kid his favourites were early Manic Street Preachers, around the time of The Holy Bible, he was also into Suede up until Bernard Butler left. All time favourite band though is probably New Order, favourite solo Artist is Neil Young hands down!

His favourite bar in London?

Probably Inside 72 in East Dulwich, it's a small bar, very much like something you'd find in NYC, with a great selection of Beers that you don't normally find in your usual boozer. It's in an old shop, really tiny, a bit like Jaguar Shoes in Shoreditch, apart from it only plays alternative and rock music.

His favourite sandwich filling?

Sausage sandwich with shed loads of ketchup!

His Favourite girl band?

Hmm, he can think of loads of bands with female lead singers, although that doesn't really count, does it? It's probably a toss up between The Supremes and The Sugababes.

And actually, same questions to you, Mr Dollyrocker:

Favourite cocktail?

Bit of a cliche, but you can't beat a jug of Tequila Sunrise on a summer evening!

Favourite band?

Is two answers cool? Old band - My Bloody Valentine, new(ish) band - CSS. Overall fave band ever though? Pulp. (Isn't that three answers? - Ed.)

Favourite bar in London

Probably Below Zero, the Absolut Vodka Ice Bar, it's just so cool (Yes, he is trying to be funny - Ed). Otherwise, The Spaniards in Hampstead. Dick Turpin was born there, and I met Liam Gallagher in there the other week. They also have London's poshest peas.

Favourite sandwich filling?

No contest, roast beef and very strong horseradish.

Favourite girl band?

Easy, Chicks On Speed.

See. They like girl bands and good bars and play good tunes. What else do you need to know? Hmmm? Well, if there is anything else, get yourself down to Bar rumba next week and ask them then. And why not stay for a bit of a dance while you're there?

YellowBlack starts on 13th February at Bar Rumba. Bar Rumba is on Shaftesbury Avenue and we can't think of a single reason why you shouldn't go.
