Glitterbitch meets: She Makes War

fixed.jpg

To continue our love of women who kick ass, we had a cup of tea with She Makes War singer Laura Kidd. Ms. Kidd has been singing for years on various stages for various people. She hangs out with the likes of Lil Chris. She drinks in airport bars with Paul McCartney. She also has quite cool hair.

You can listen to her here. You can go and see She Makes War here. But before you do, read about her here.

Tell us about She Makes War.

She Makes War is the name of my solo musical project. I’m writing and starting to record my debut album at the moment, mostly in my bedroom - literally.

What's so darn good about She Makes War?

The music’s more grungey and tougher than people expect from a girl with a guitar (as ridiculous as that is!) Sometimes I wear sequins on my face.

Where would you like to make war?

On stages across the land.

Who would you like to have a war with?

Everyone who ever asked me if I was “with the band” or if I knew where to put my guitar lead (don’t tempt me...). Various people from my past who made me feel inadequate or tried to make me think I couldn’t make the music that I wanted. People who think they know it all, bigots, racists and misogynists.

What else have you got planned after the gig on Sunday?

I’m recording demos of new songs at the moment and am aiming to expand the live sound by bringing in a laptop and some other instruments. I’ve been writing depressing songs on the ukulele recently so I’d love to be able to share those with people!

Where's your favourite london bar? What do you drink there?

I don’t go to bars except to play, but I love The Fox in Lewisham where I'm playing on Sunday because they’re really friendly and they have an amazing lighting rig.

Favourite london restaurant? What do you eat there?

Mildred’s - there’s a massive vegan selection and I always push the boat out and do three courses. They serve excellent bangers and mash and their fruit crumble is just lovely.

Do you dunk biscuits in your tea?

I do not. The only good vegan biscuits I’ve found are chocolate bourbons, but you can only buy them in giant multipacks so I steer clear for the sake of my health. I do drink insane amounts of tea though.

Favourite band? Favourite london venue? Last song you listened to on your ipod?

I’m currently loving Theoretical Girl and Ruth Theodore, who both live in London. My favourite small venue for watching bands is Monkey Chews in Chalk Farm, and my favourite big venue is Shepherds Bush Empire - but only if I get to sit down upstairs, downstairs it’s all loud chattering from the people at the bar. The last song I listened to on my iPod was ‘Planet Earth’ by Duran Duran while I was out running this morning.

You've got two hours in London in the afternoon. Where do you go? What do you do???

If I’m vaguely east I’ll wander around Brick Lane and surrounding streets, rifling through the racks at Beyond Retro, checking my emails at Rough Trade East and picking up a snack from Rootmaster. More central and I’d start at the National Portrait Gallery then go up in to Chinatown to stock up on jasmine tea before window-shopping in Soho.

Laura Kidd is making war at the at The Fox and Firkin on Lewisham High Street and you should go and see if she has sequins on her face. Maybe buy her some bourbons too. She also wants us to tell you that the photo was taken by David Renfrey.
