Glitterbitch gets nosy
Glitterbitch meets: Claire Davidson
Last week we told you about the new exhibition Marking/Erasing. We managed to have a chat with Edinburgh based artist Claire Davidson to find out a bit more about the show. We also got an insight into her impressions of London. Want to know how our city feels to a non-Londoner then click 'read more' to see what Claire had to say.
What's the exhibition called? Where is it? when is it?
It's called Marking/Erasing and you can see it at Viewfinder Photography Gallery in Greenwich until March 14th.
What's it all about?
It’s an exhibition about the relationship between drawing and photography. The ideas is that by showing my work and Julia Mariscal’s work together, contrasts and similarities between our ideas will be highlighted. My work explores the fragility and dynamism of the human body in motion. I am fascinated by combining the processes of mark-making and photography - both records of movement through time.
Tell us more about you!
I am an Edinburgh based artist working with drawing, photography and printmaking. I am particularly interested in working with the body in motion, with dance and physical theatre. I have been working with an international performance company, The Famous Spiegeltent to create an installation of images to replace missing mirrors inside the antique mirror tent.
Do you dunk your biscuits in your tea?
Mmm yes I certainly do, but I have little nibbles of the dry biscuit in between dunks for the crunchy contrast pleasure. But please will someone invent me a gluten free biscuit that is mush resistant?
You're not from London, tell us what you think of it?
After taking 10 trains, 5.5 hours and £25 to get from North West London to Greenwich and back today, not much.
If I could collect up the friendly people and the fun goings-on, put them in a brown paper bag and take them up to Scotland, there’d be no need for the place at all.
What is your favourite part? Favourite bar? cafe? Secret bits?
Primrose hill and Hampstead apart from all the 'yaas', though that's a bit of an oxymoron. As for bars, haven't found a nice one yet, any ideas? I quite like that big mad cheap hippy cafe off brick lane (That's Cafe 1001 - Ed) and a dead nice little cafe in Greenwich on Royal Hill – wicked banana-choc milkshake combo (That's Royal Teas - Ed). My secret bits? Pineapple Studios in Covent Garden, it’s amazing. I also got drunk in some Mexican cocktail bar in Leicester Square where my good friend's boyfriend tossed and twirled and threw things and gave us free stuff.
If you had two free hours in London where would you go? What would you do?
In an idealistic world of a fantasy London dream-scape, I would get stand on the top of really really high building as the sunset while eating Tyrells red apple cinnamon chips and listening to opera, but realistically, I'd be stuck on an underground train on the Jubilee line, with a scabby guy trying to steal money off me.
What are Claire's future plans for artistic domination?
CLAIRE DAVIDSON shall be written in 4 meter high letters along the top of the Tate Modern. Hooray!
Anything else that I have not asked that you'd like to tell me?
I am totally open to suggestions of how my opinion of London can be improved, as I’m sure with so many lovely people here, there must be a whole lot of good hidden away.
You can see Claire's work in Greenwich until March 14th. In the mean time, we hopes she continues reading Glitterditch to get news on all the great bars and places in London. We hope she has a better time next time she's down here.
