What we've been watching.

A Prayer for My Daughter

Last night, we went to the Young Vic to see A Prayer for My Daughter by Thomas Babe. It's about two New York police and two guys who've been arrested for the murder of an old lady. There was a lot of tension, more than a dose of sinister attitude, some very complex relationships and even a naked man. But we know you only want to know one thing: Was it any good?

Well, yes it is good. We really enjoyed it. We like the Young Vic. We like that the stage is almost in the round but not quite. We didn't once feel like we were missing out on the action which we great. That would have annoyed us. The director, Dominic Hill has made sure there's always something for you to watch.

And the actors are good. They have to be. There's only four of them in the show. If they weren't any good, you'd really notice it. Thankfully, they carry the play well and we loved watching them (despite a few questionable accents at times).

We weren't sure of the plot. Or rather, we don't think the plot was as good as the acting. There seemed to be a lot of unnecessary dialogue which didn't help move things along. While it was all very interesting, we wanted things to keep moving. It's a very static play, the action doesn't leave the one room. We overheard the audience members saying they lost focus every now and again and we can understand why.

We loved Colin Morgan's character. He stole the show for us (and not because he was naked for part of the second act.) He plays Jimmy, a young drug addict who's clearly losing the plot. To the point where it's uncomfortable to watch. He's the strongest character by far. We'd recommend the show on Morgan's performance alone.

And we would recommend A Prayer for My Daughter. We enjoyed it. But we really wanted to love it. We didn't come out raving about it, but we like the Young Vic and we'll keep an eye on them and the clearly talented actors that were in this play.
